Nitrous Oxide

Posted on 4/10/2015 by Tom Bierman

A nitrous oxide machine. There are lots of people (of all ages) who have a fear of visiting the dentist. The reasons vary from fear of needles, fear of the dentist, fear of the procedure and even fear of the unknown. Because of this fear, many people who need dental care simply don't go to the dentist and suffer needless consequences that could easily be avoided.

You should know that dentists are fully aware of these fears and strive to make dental visits and treatments comfortable for each patient. One of the tools used by dentists is nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas. The name laughing gas comes from the fact that when the nitrous oxide is first administered it can cause patients to giggle.

How Nitrous Oxide works

If selected as an option, nitrous oxide is administered through inhalation and essentially progresses through several steps until the patient is fully sedated. Initially the patient feels lightheaded and often giggles. In step two, patients may feel a bit of tingling in the extremities followed by a warming sensation throughout the body. As the effect continues, euphoria and even the feeling of floating are often described by patients. Finally, the effect progresses to sleepiness and the dental procedure begins.

Should you have fears about visiting, please contact the office and let us alleviate your fears and work to get you the care you need without fear, but in a pleasant and comfortable environment.
