Simple Ways to Keep Kids Away from Sugar
|
Posted on 4/20/2015 by Tom Bierman |
If you have ever heard the term "everything in moderation" you already have a head start on getting your kids on the healthy dental diet.
Sugar is not the beast that everyone makes it out to be as long as it is consumed in moderation and the proper oral hygiene habits take place shortly after consuming it. The kids that consistently snack on sugary foods and do not properly brush their teeth are the ones that put their oral health at greatest risk. So how do you keep your kids away from the snacks that seem to be at their beck and call with every commercial and birthday party?
• Discuss the importance of good health. Educate your children on the importance of healthy foods and what they look like. This includes helping them determine which carbohydrates are healthy and which are just processed chemicals that wreak havoc on their teeth. When your children are molded to make proper decisions, they will do it on their own without feeling like you are forcing them to do it.
• Don't say "no." What kid likes hearing that they cannot do something? Instead, give them options that include healthy choices. This puts them "in control" in their mind, while still allowing you to steer them in the right direction without being the mean parent.
• Keep the unhealthy snacks out of the house. Out of sight, out of mind works every time with kids and food. If there are not sugary cereals, granola bars, cookies and cakes lying around, your children will not ask for them. Instead provide them with whole milk cheeses and yogurts; fruits and vegetables and lean proteins.
