Three Ways to Make Flossing Easier

Posted on 6/22/2015 by Tom Bierman
Dental Floss in hand, preparing to floss teethFlossing is something that not everyone does, despite the immense benefits! If you are not a regular flosser, it is time to start as you could be wreaking havoc not only on your oral health, but your physical health too. The extra few minutes it takes per day to floss could prevent gum disease, tooth loss, and even heart disease. If you avoid flossing because you think it is too hard or too time consuming, try these simple tips.

Use Waxed Floss

There are numerous types of floss to choose from when you head to the drug store. Before you get overwhelmed and just give up, stick with the standard waxed floss - the type you probably used growing up. This minty wax will make it very easy to glide through your teeth, making flossing much easier than other types of floss. If you have bad experiences with floss getting stuck between your teeth or fraying while you floss, leaving annoying little threads behind, waxed floss will likely provide you with what you need. Make sure when you are flossing with waxed floss that you use a piece that is large enough to not only fit through your teeth, but also fit comfortable in your hands so that you do not get caught up in your mouth, causing frustration and you to quit flossing.

Use Floss Threaders

Floss threaders are a great tool for anyone that finds flossing difficult. Whether you have orthodontic appliances, tightly aligned teeth, or are losing some of your flexibility due to old age, floss threaders make flossing very simple. You can think of them as like a fine tipped piece of floss that works its way in between your teeth. You simply thread the floss onto the back end of the flosser, making sure that there is enough for it to stay and then weave the threader through your teeth. Once the threader is completely through, you pull the floss through your teeth and floss as normal. It takes the stress out of getting the floss stuck or tearing while in between your teeth and ensures that you are doing a good job in getting the bacteria out from your gum line.

Floss Before Brushing your Teeth

Many people wait until after they brush their teeth to floss. If they are too tired that night or just don't feel like it, they skip it. Why take that chance? Instead, floss before you brush your teeth. Not only does this ensure that you will floss, it is also a better habit to use. When you floss first, you are freeing plaque and bacteria from those tight crevices. If you were to leave that plaque and bacteria in your mouth, it would start to bother other areas of your mouth. If instead, you brush those pesky particles away, your mouth is left extra clean and the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and subsequent heart disease are diminished.

Flossing is a crucial component of your oral health care. If you are unsure about how to floss, just ask us at your next appointment.
