Professional Cleanings, Exams, and X-Rays

 Your oral health is important. We want to see you at our San Diego office at least twice a year for a professional cleaning performed by our hygienist.
We have the greatest team of four trained Hygienists at our office. When they meet with you, they will use specialized tools to:

First, remove any plaque build-up from the surfaces of your teeth. Plaque is made up from bacteria that is found in everybody's mouth. This plaque, collects on your teeth and causes decay which can progress to cavities, gum disease, and gingivitis. |

Next, our Hygienist will remove any tartar that has built up from the tooth surfaces. Tartar, sometimes called calculus, is that bacteria, plaque, that has rested on your teeth so long that it has hardened and its removal requires special procedures. When we find Tartar below the gum-line it is an indication of gum disease. |

Finally, our Hygienist will remove surface stains, these stains gather from normal use, and then the teeth are polished. |
Sometimes our patients require a procedure called a deep cleaning. This is due to gum and periodontal disease or past periodontal treatments. Dr. Bierman, Dr. Ma, or Dr. Summerhays will review your dental history and discuss with you any issues you may need treatment for.
Dental Examinations
Dental Examinations, by any of our three dentists, help detect and prevent dental health issues. By scheduling consistent dental check-ups, we can hopefully catch problems when they are small. If you ignore dental problems, small treatable problems will become worse requiring larger, expensive procedures to repair. Our dental examinations generally include the following:

Evaluate for any visual tooth decay. |

Digital X-ray help detect hidden problems such as tooth decay, cysts, tumors and problems below the gums. |

Gum pocket measurement, we want your teeth to have a strong foundation. |
| • |
Gum disease screening, look for any red, sore gums. |
| • |
Oral cancer screening, we look for any abnormalities in the oral cavity. |
Regular examinations by Dr. Bierman, Dr. Ma, or Dr. Summerhays are very important for your oral health.
X-rays (Radiographs)
X-rays are really our best tool. They allow us to see problems that we can't see with our eyes alone. With modern x-rays, we are able to look at your teeth quickly and easily using significantly less radiation. We use them to look for internal tooth decay, cysts or tumors, impacted teeth, and teeth that are still coming in.
