Dentures

A pair of dentures floating inside a glass of water. When there are few or no remaining healthy teeth, the best option may be Dentures. Dentures are a replacement option when most or all of your natural teeth are missing or beyond repair. Commonly, there are two options for Dentures, partial and full. The option will be decided between you, our patient, and our dental team at San Diego Dental Studio.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is preferred for your comfort. It is a removable dental appliance that is held in place with attachments to the remaining healthy teeth, usually with metal clasps. If you have any remaining healthy teeth, this is your best option. Having a stable structure to attach your partial denture to, allows you to have more comfort in chewing and talking without the denture shifting and moving.

There are more extensive options, for instance Dental Implants, but this is an economical solution for missing teeth in the same arch (either the upper or the lower) to be replaced. Dr. Bierman, Dr. Ma, or Dr. Summerhays will need to determine through examination if your gums and the anchor teeth are healthy enough for a partial denture.

Why Get a Partial Denture?

•  Multiple teeth missing in the same arch, this leads to other issues such as shifting and bone atrophy.
•  Restore your natural chewing function, often we see patients who have just stopped eating certain foods due to their teeth.

Patients can sometimes feel self conscious about the metal clasps being visible, they worry that it will affect the beauty of their smile. There are options available to reduce or eliminate the need for visible clasps. Ask us how.

There are other options. Ask our San Diego Dental team about alternatives including: bridges, dental implants or full dentures

Full Dentures

A Full Denture when there are no remaining healthy teeth. This is a removable prosthesis made of tooth colored plastic teeth set in a pink gum-colored plastic base. It rests on the remaining gum ridge with an over the counter adhesive.

This is not an easy decision for our patients. Full Dentures is life altering, and it will not be the same as having your own natural teeth. Dentures will impact the variety of food you are able to eat and your self-confidence in social situations.

When Would I Get Full Dentures?

•  All teeth are missing or not healthy and need to be removed in the same arch, either lower or upper.
•  If you are finding problems with being able to eat food due to the loss of teeth.
•  If you feel unhappy due to several missing or decayed teeth.
•  If you are unable to afford more extensive options, ie. Dental Implants.

Dentures are a 'I have no other option' choice. Upper full dentures feel better than a lower full dentures. If you need a lower denture, it is advisable to examine using dental implants as a retentive mechanism. Two dental implants placed in the lower jaw can help anchor the denture and significantly improve comfort. We may even be able to place implants after a denture has been in use for several years.
